Investigators ponder criminal charges for death of woman at Brooklyn hospital

Friday, July 04, 2008

Investigators in New York are considering filing criminal charges after a woman believed to be Jamaican died at the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn while waiting for almost 24 hours for treatment.

The cause of death of 49-year-old Esmine Green has not yet been determined; however, a shocking surveillance video shows her sitting on a chair in the hospital's waiting room on June 19th, after which she falls off the chair, hits her head and lands on the floor. She then struggles, but appears too weak to get up and remains prostrate on the floor for almost an hour.

The video also shows that Green was ignored by hospital staff and two security guards who checked on her while she lay on the floor, but made no attempts to help her.

At the same time, reports are that city investigators are also probing whether medical records were altered to indicate that Green, a mother of six, was alive at the time the videotape shows her prostrate on the ground.

City officials have turned over the video to attorneys for the Civil Liberties Union and mental health advocates since this case is now linked to a civil-rights lawsuit, highlighting the way the hospital treats psychiatric patients, that was filed against the hospital last year.

Wednesday, The Associated Press reported that city hospital officials agreed in court Tuesday to implement reforms at the hospital's psychiatric ward following the incident. These include shortening the average waiting time for patients as well as checking on them in the waiting room every 15 minutes. Four employees and two security guards were also fired as a result of the incident, according to reports.
