An interactive workshop aimed at assisting families to cope with children affected by Down's Syndrome is being staged tomorrow by the Jamaica Down's Syndrome Foundation.
The workshop, scheduled to begin at 9:30 am at Tropical Elegance, 6 Cunningham Avenue, Kingston 6, will be addressed by Jolie and Doris Kanat.
The workshop will focus on:
. bringing parents, siblings, and grandparents together into the circle of understanding and acceptance;
. initial and ongoing reactions of extended family, ie siblings, grandparents, etc;
. suggestions to help bring the family closer and awareness of parents and children's needs; and
. audience-shared experiences and helpful hints. Jolie Kanat is a professional writer and teacher with published work in almost every medium, including a full-length non-fiction book, Bittersweet Baby. She is also a standard substitute contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle's features page.
Doris Kanat holds a Master's Degree in Education and a second Master's Degree in Social Work, as well as five administrative certifications in public service. She has presented her personalised workshops to countless families, schools, administrators, and at community programmes.
