Down's Syndrome workshop tomorrow

Friday, October 10, 2008

An interactive workshop aimed at assisting families to cope with children affected by Down's Syndrome is being staged tomorrow by the Jamaica Down's Syndrome Foundation.

The workshop, scheduled to begin at 9:30 am at Tropical Elegance, 6 Cunningham Avenue, Kingston 6, will be addressed by Jolie and Doris Kanat.

The workshop will focus on:

. bringing parents, siblings, and grandparents together into the circle of understanding and acceptance;

. initial and ongoing reactions of extended family, ie siblings, grandparents, etc;

. suggestions to help bring the family closer and awareness of parents and children's needs; and

. audience-shared experiences and helpful hints.
Jolie Kanat is a professional writer and teacher with published work in almost every medium, including a full-length non-fiction book, Bittersweet Baby. She is also a standard substitute contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle's features page.

Doris Kanat holds a Master's Degree in Education and a second Master's Degree in Social Work, as well as five administrative certifications in public service. She has presented her personalised workshops to countless families, schools, administrators, and at community programmes.
