A task force appointed by the government to identify appropriate initiatives and areas to better protect children at risk, is expected to submit its report to Prime Minister Bruce Golding by next week.
Making the announcement in the House of Representatives Tuesday, Golding said that the decision to form the task force was triggered by his administration's deep concern at the violence to which so many children have become victims.
"I convened a meeting today with the Attorney General; the ministers of National Security, Health and Information, Culture, Youth and Sports; and the Children's Advocate, to review the state of security of our children and the institutional arrangements to protect them and to respond more effectively when they are in danger," the prime minister said.
A decision was taken at the meeting to appoint the task force. Since 2003, nearly 400 children have allegedly been killed by violent means, either due to gang warfare or personal attacks, including abductions, rape and murder, while 441 have reportedly been injured by the gun.
