Entertainers in shock over Ice's murder

Members of the entertainment fraternity were yesterday in shock and mourning over the murder of popular dancer, Andrew Smith, more popularly known as 'Ice'.

The 36-year-old dancer was shot by gunmen in a bar on Newark Avenue in Kingston early yesterday morning.

Smith had earlier this year gained his biggest level of recognition when his dance move, the Gully Creeper, was performed by Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt after he won the 200 metre final in world record time, days after winning the 100 metres, also in a new world record, at the Olympics held in China.

Ice's murder also comes a few weeks before the anniversary of the slaying of his former colleague and dancehall icon, Gerald Levy, also known as Bogle.

Bogle, who along with Smith were members of the Black Roses Crew, was gunned down at a gas station in Half-Way-Tree in January 2005.

"Right now I hardly can find words to express how I feel," said popular deejay Oneil Bryan, who uses the stage name Elephant Man.

"To see that the dancer was just enjoying his life and to see this happening to him is very tragic and the whole entertainment fraternity - the entertainers and the dancers - are all mourning," said Elephant Man, who helped popularise the Gully Creeper with a recording.

Sean Reid, also known as 'Sean Izzle', the producer of the Gully Creeper Rhythm, also expressed shock at Ice's murder.

"Right now, to tell you the truth, I am still in shock," said Reid. "I don't even know what to say right now. It was just last night (Christmas night) I see the man a do him thing and to know that him career was just getting bigger and bigger, to get a phone call with this news is just sad."

Another popular music producer who gives his name only as 'Q45', was equally shocked.

"It is really sad to hear this," he said. "Ice was a very good dancer who was aiming for big things."
