OCID busts alleged car-stealing racket

Friday, January 09, 2009

The police's Organised Crime Investigative Division (OCID) say they have busted an alleged car-stealing racket after recovering hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of parts Tuesday from a premises on Eureka Road, near Cross Roads.

One man was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of the parts and is to appear in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court next Thursday.

Yesterday, Corporal Kadian Smith said a team from OCID, "acting on information", went to the premises where
they allegedly recovered the car parts.

"The proprietor of the premises failed to account suitably as to how he came into possession of the parts, hence he was taken into custody," Smith alleged.

"We also seized a quantity of C-78 forms which we believe were forged and used to assist in the change of engines as it relates to stolen vehicles as well as to facilitate the smooth transfer of motor vehicles under the disguise that they were lawfully imported and obtained," he added.

The police suspect that the parts, which included several bumpers, hoods, fenders, doors and engine parts,
were scrapped from stolen motor vehicles or stolen
from elsewhere.

Most of the parts, Smith alleged, were from Toyota, Suzuki, Honda and Nissan motor vehicles and were believed to have been slated for sale in the local market as well as for export to other Caribbean countries.

"We made several of these seizures last year and we remain resolute that we will intensify the drive to crack down on auto theft this year. Whosoever assists these culprits in carrying out their acts will also be prosecuted, we will leave no stone unturned," added Smith.
