$34-m road improvement works begin in Hanover, Westmoreland

Tuesday, May 05, 2009

MONTEGO BAY, St James - The National Works Agency (NWA) has begun improvement works valued at $34 million on a number of roadways across the western parishes of Hanover and Westmoreland.

In Hanover, the agency is spending some $20 million, while $14 million is projected to be spent in the neighbouring parish of Westmoreland.

According to community relations officer for the NWA's western region, Janel Ricketts, the work being carried out in Westmoreland involves the implementation of a major retaining wall programme, at a cost of $14 million.

The work, she said, is expected to be completed within the next four weeks.

"To date the contractors have completed the construction of the retaining walls along the Strawberry, Darliston and Seaford Town main roads," she noted.

She added that construction of the retaining wall along the Content roadway will commence early this month.

The commencement of the improvement works in Westmoreland, follows on the heels of the recent completion of a $4.6-million patching programme in the parish.

Ricketts said the programme targeted the worst affected sections of the Hertford to Flower Hill roadway, the main road between Scotts Cove and Smithfield Bridge, and the Grange Hill to Little London main road.

Hanover's allocation of roughly $20 million, Ricketts said, is being spent to rehabilitate and to undertake drainage improvement works on 10 roads.

These include the roughly four-kilometre Cascade to Cash Hill roadway, which is being done at a cost of $13.8 million, while $6.3 million is being spent on a major routine maintenance and patching programme on several other roadways.
