Court to rule on Hampden today

Friday, July 10, 2009

A Supreme Court ruling today could determine whether or not the Government would be allowed to sell the Hampden Sugar Estate in Trelawny as part of its divestment programme of the sugar industry.

Justice Lennox Campbell on Tuesday reserved judgement until Friday when he is expected to make a ruling either to extend or lift the injunction currently blocking the sale of the Hampden Sugar Estate.

The injunction was obtained in April by the Farquharson family, who wants an extension until the court determines the rightful owners of the estate.

The family is contending that the estate, which fell into the hands of the state through the FINSAC, is theirs, while the Sugar Company of Jamaica is also claiming ownership.

Both sides had, since last week Thursday, been making submissions on the issue of the injunction.
