Woman held after $11m cash haul released

Friday, July 10, 2009

A woman who was arrested when police seized $11 million at a house in Sydenham Villas, St Catherine has been released without charge.

Head of the Organised Crime Investigative Division, Superintendent Fitz Bailey, said investigators did not believe she was connected to the seized money.
"We have reason to believe she was not the owner of the cash, so she was released. Our investigations continue," Bailey told the Observer.

The police reported Wednesday that the house, located just outside the parish capital of Spanish Town, was under surveillance for two months before they raided the premises and seized £78,000 (approximately J$10,854,510) and J$100,000 - and a small quantity of substance resembling crack cocaine, in a vault inside the house.

Police believe the cash was proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs.
