Netherlands Antilles grants amnesty to illegal C'bean migrants
CMC
Friday, November 06, 2009
PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten (CMC) - The Netherlands Antilles has launched an amnesty targeting thousands of immigrants from other Caribbean countries living there illegally.
The six-week programme, known as the "Brooks Tower Accord", started earlier this week and will allow immigrants who meet the requirements of the amnesty to acquire the necessary documents to live and work in those territories.
Officials in the Netherlands Antilles said the status of the illegal immigrants will be upgraded if they can prove that they lived in the territories since December 31, 2006 or can show a valid employment contract.
Officials estimate that about 70,000 immigrants, primarily Jamaicans, Guyanese and Haitians, live in the Netherlands Antilles without valid residency papers or work permits.
