THE Transport Authority (TA) is refuting a claim made by several protesting operators that the new road traffic Bill contains a $75,000 fine for failure to display a public passenger vehicle badge while operating, and is insisting that it should be dismissed as fake news.

Managing director of the Transport Authority Cecil Morgan, in a news release yesterday, said that matters related to the public transportation sector are being transferred from the Road Traffic Act to the Transport Authority Act which is currently under review.

In the meantime, the Transport Authority said the current practice in the Traffic Courts is for the maximum fine levied for badge infractions to be $5,000.

Accordingly, Transport Authority said it is appealing to the protesting operators to let good sense prevail by discontinuing protests and resume orderly and lawful service to the commuting public.

Taxi operators continued to withdraw their services yesterday, citing several problems in the sector that they say have not been addressed.
