Peter Shaw — the cook who remembers it all

BEING able to recall the exact order for each guest you come in contact with is no easy task; however, omelette and fried egg maker chef Peter Shaw accomplishes this task every day.

He is able to remember guests' breakfast orders for the 15 years that he has worked with Sandals and Beaches Resorts.

Having started his Sandals journey in 2003 at Beaches Ocho Rios as a Level 3 cook, Shaw said he has never forgotten a breakfast order he has made for a guest. This, he believes, gives him an extra edge in providing all his guests with exceptional service and exceeding their expectations as is the Sandals philosophy. “I'm gifted with special memory I can remember my guests' order no matter how long ago they came. When you remember their order like that the guest feels very good.”

Recalling his introduction to the Sandals brand, Shaw said it was a chance encounter that gave him the job of his dreams. “I was in a bank in Ocho Rios, fresh off the Commodore cruise ship, where I worked for six years. I was talking to a friend who knew the human resource manager at Beaches and she encouraged me to apply, stating she would put in a good word for me. The rest, as they say, is history.”

Shaw's years at Beaches have brought him much joy, especially in 2005 when he won the coveted Employee of the Year title. After nine years he saw an opportunity for growth and transitioned to Sandals Ochi Beach Resort where he is now a Level 1 cook.

Not missing a beat, Shaw continues to wow all his guests, especially the huge number of returning guests who visit the resort year after year. Even guests he encountered during his tenure at Beaches, years ago, still marvel at his ability to recall their orders when they visit Sandals Ochi. “I don't like to ask the guests to repeat what they want so I ensure I listen carefully and give them what they want,” said Shaw. “I have a really good memory, so once I hear it or see it, I remember it.”

He added: “I really care about my guests and what they want, so I go out of my way to make sure they are happy.”

Of all his exploits and travels Sandals, for him, has been his best decision yet. “Sandals is a good company; they look out for their staff and we get a lot of recognition, and I like that. I don't have to worry about a thing when I work at Sandals, they take care of us.”

Natoya Bromwell, assistant food and beverage manager at Sandals Ochi Beach Resort, is amazed by Shaw's gift of memory. “Peter remembers it all. Once you tell him or show him, he catches on and can remember for years. Our guests love that because it makes them feel at home by the simple fact that he remembers their order — even to the amount of oil or salt they want on their eggs — he remembers.

“I enjoy what I do and I love it, especially the fact that I'm getting to do it at Sandals. I've started a new journey at Sandals and that is where I'm going to stay,” said Shaw.
