COMMUNITY groups, entrepreneurs and tertiary-level students are being invited to enter the 2019 CEMEX-Tec Awards for a chance to win millions of dollars in seed capital, as well as the opportunity to receive training and exposure.

Now in its ninth year, the CEMEX-Tec Award, a release from Caribbean Cement Company Limited said yesterday, recognises individuals and groups who develop high-impact proposals and projects focusing on sustainable development, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

The award offers specialised one-week boot camps, coaching and seed capital of US$10,000 or US$25,000, depending on the category.

The release said entries can be submitted to the CEMEX-Tec Award in any of four categories:

• Transforming Communities — aimed at undergraduate and graduate students with proposals for the sustainable transformation of a community;

• Social Entrepreneurship — aimed at entrepreneurs with projects that solve social problems and encourage systemic change, with the potential of becoming a social business;

• Communitarian Entrepreneurship — aimed at organisations, foundations, cooperatives, or civil associations with productive projects of social transformation;

• Collaborative Action — aimed at organisations with social impact projects implemented through multi-sectoral partnerships.

“The CEMEX-Tec Award began accepting entries from around the world in 2018. In that first year of receiving global submissions, a Caribbean person was among the winners. Alpha Sennon of Trinidad and Tobago won in the social entrepreneur category for his project, WHY-Farm or We Help Youth Farm, which promotes sustainable agriculture among youth and children. So we encourage university students, NGOs, CBOs and social entrepreneurs to enter, as this could be a gateway to valuable development opportunities,” said Klao Bell-Lewis, head of communications and community outreach at Caribbean Cement Company Ltd.

Carib Cement is a member of the CEMEX Group, which is a global building materials company, the release said.

To submit entries, teams should sign up and upload their projects to indicating the category for their proposals. The deadline to submit projects is May 31, 2019, the release said.
