COOPERS PEN, Trelawny — Tragedy struck at the construction site of Excellence Oyster Bay hotel in Trelawny when a worker, who fell from an 18-wheeler tractor trailer he had hopped on to, was crushed to death yesterday morning.

The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old mason Andrew Garrick of Golden Grove, St Ann.

The gruesome incident has halted work on the site for the rest of the weekend. Work is expected to resume on Monday.

Reports from the police are that about 7:40 yesterday morning, Garrick hopped on to the vehicle which was laden with building blocks. The construction worker reportedly slipped and was run over by the trailer's wheel. He died instantly.

Yesterday, Garrick's colleagues fought hard to come to grips with his bizarre death.

“I don't know him much, but I know they call him 'Mosquito'. He used to work on a column close to me. It just sad. It's sad,” one of the workers who milled around after the worksite was shut down yesterday said.

“Me don't know him none at all, but me feel it fi know say him dead pon the job dem way yah,” a man with dreadlocks said.

The Jamaica Observer could not get permission to enter the premises to speak to the managers on the site.

Meanwhile, personnel from the traffic department of the Falmouth Police Station are investigating.

At the end of March, Prime Minister Andrew Holness broke ground for construction of the hotel, which was reportedly going to create 2,200 jobs for Jamaicans during the building and operation phases.

The US$110-million project is being undertaken by the Excellence Group, which is renowned for its award-winning luxury properties.

The hotel is expected to open its doors to guests in the first half of 2018. It will feature 325 suites with expansive living spaces, panoramic ocean views and direct beach access.
