Portmore woman accused of misappropriation gets bail

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

A former employee of Serv-Wel Industrial Ltd who is accused of pocketing almost $5 million from the company, was last Friday offered bail in the sum of $1 million when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

The accused, Tenesiah Parkinson, 33, of Portmore, St Catherine is charged with eight counts of embezzlement and larceny as a servant.

It is alleged that between June 2009 and January 2010, Parkinson, who was employed as a sales representative, wrote fictitious invoices for stoves, using the names of customers in the company's database. It was further alleged that Parkinson then collected the stoves from the company's warehouse and resold them.

In some cases, the court was told, Parkinson collected items such as camera, laptops, television and colognes in exchange for some of the stoves.

In addition, it was alleged that Parkinson collected legitimate payments for stoves sold on behalf of the company but failed to turn over the money to Serv-Wel.

Following investigations, Parkinson was arrested on February 7 for allegedly misappropriating $4.9 million from the company.

In offering bail to the accused, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked her to surrender her travel documents, while a stop order was placed on her. She was also asked to report to the Greater Portmore Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Parkinson will return to court on May 20 when the case will again be mentioned.
