MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Members of the Optimist Club of Mandeville are busy with plans for the new year.

Newly elected president, Donna Hepburn, told the Jamaica Observer Central that the major projects on the agenda for 2018 include an essay and oratorical competition and the care of children with cancer, autism and HIV/AIDS.

She took on her role as head of the organisation in late October.

The administrative professional previously served as secretary of the Optimist Club. She succeeded educator David Powell as president.

Hepburn said since her tenure at the helm, members of her team have participated in activities such as World Homeless Day, a parenting forum was organised, there was a Book and Bake sale fundraiser, a Christmas hamper raffle fundraiser, and a Christmas Treat at the Caledonia Early Childhood Institution. Prior to that, there was a youth appreciation event at the school which included an offer by the Optimist Club for educational support for five children.

She said the primary objective of the service club is to assist and encourage youth development.
