Pall-bearers carry the casket bearing the body of Volney Barrett from the Kings Chapel United Pentecostal Church, Albion Road, Montego Bay, on Saturday, en-route to its final earthly resting place in Spring Vale, St Elizabeth, following a service of thanksgiving for the late western Jamaica-based journalist.

The 32-year-old Barrett, who was a reporter at the Western Mirror for more than 12 years, died on February 28.

On Saturday, he was remembered as an exceptional individual, who used his skills as a journalist to seek out information.

Publisher of the Western Mirror, Lloyd B Smith, in his glowing tribute, hailed Barrett as one of the most outstanding individuals who has ever worked at the western-based newspaper, stressing that he would be sadly missed.

Smith also told the hundreds of mourners that a “young man of his (Barrett's) stature should not be forgotten,” as he announced that a scholarship in honour of the late journalist will be made available to a student at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Western Jamaica Campus.
