MONTEGO BAY, St James - Caymanian outfit Island Bwoy with a total of 800 points topped the 56th Annual Montego Bay Yacht Club International Marlin Tournament held last week in Montego Bay.

Bobby Stewart, the director of Game Fish Events, organisers of the tournament, explained that they originally had interest from eight Caymanian teams for this year's tournament, but only five made it among the 27 teams that competed this year.

“We have been getting a lot of interest from competitors in Cayman, based on our distance. we are only 200 miles away and the event is the most enjoyable and fun in the Caribbean. Next year we are looking to get a lot of teams from Cayman,” Stewart said.

Mayberry Investments team, on board the Safe Passage, picked up second place. The team tied on points with Island Bwoy but were beaten on time, as Island Bwoy reeled in their catch earlier.

The Sashimo vessel anchored third place, while the Guy Harvey team on board the Makaira placed fourth.

“We had a very good tournament in terms of turnout and enjoyment by teams and spectators, but we were affected by a hot water system that moved in from the west that pushed all the cool water off the coast. Only 10 marlins were caught over the tournament period, to put that in perspective, in 2014 we caught 24 over the first two days. We are happy nonetheless, as competitors enjoyed the tournament and have already signed on for next year,” said Stewart.
