Owens, Mussenden named champion boy, girl at Western Champs

CATHERINE HALL, St James - Cornwall College's Owayne Owens and Rusea's High's Marney Mussenden were on Saturday named champion boy and girl, respectively, at the County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Digicel Western Championships at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Owens, who won the Class 1 triple jump and high jump, and took second place in the long jump, scored 25 points; while Mussenden won the Class 1 long jump, was third in the javelin and tied for third in the high jump, amassed 20.5 points.

The two athletes, who also qualified for the Digicel Grand Prix finals, were also presented with bursaries of $25,000 each.

Meanwhile, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) boys and Rusea's High girls retained their titles after three days of tough competition.

The STETHS boys piled up a massive 389.5 points, over 100 more than their nearest challengers Petersfield High at 286.25, who were also more than 100 points better than third-placed Munro College, who scored 165, followed by Cornwall College-(159) and Rhodes Hall -(137).
