Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie last week presented the St James Municipal Corporation with tablets and a printer aimed at assisting councillors and poor relief officers in the timely and efficient execution of their duties.

The presentation was made during the regular monthly meeting of the St James Municipal Corporation.

All 17 councillors are to receive a tablet, while five other tablets will be presented to poor relief officers at the corporation. The Poor Relief Department also received a desktop computer and printer.

In handing over the equipment, McKenzie emphasized that the donation will see “the big books becoming a thing of the pass.”

“The poor relief officers have to use some big books. And, in a time like this, when a poor relief officer should be able by just the touch of a bottom to find two or three people instead of going through all pages of a big book… and the age of technology is so well advanced that each poor relief officer from the St James Municipal Corporation will receive a tablet and, outside of the tablet, will receive a brand new computer and a printer to enhance the work of the Poor Relief Department,” McKenzie revealed.

The minister also disclosed that his ministry will be providing $14 million to the 14 municipalities across the island to further assist poor relief officers with their work.

“So, by providing the tools to work, poor relief officers also have to respond to needs. The allocations that are made to the Poor Relief Department at times, after a week or so they exhaust that money. We have committed to provide to the 14 municipal corporations across the country, an additional $14 million to poor relief officers to work, to assist, in their respective municipality,” said McKenzie.

Last Thursday McKenzie, in addition, presented the roads and works department of the St James Municipal Corporation with a truck.
