MoBay attorney recovers attaché case after appealing to the "underworld"
BY HORACE HINES Observer West reporter
Thursday, January 31, 2013
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former President of the Cornwall Bar Association and eminent Montego Bay attorney Clayton Morgan is still in awe after recovering his stolen attaché case containing valuables, shortly after making an appeal to the "underworld," instead of reporting the matter to the police.
The renown attorney told the Observer West that about 6:30 one evening last week, he went to pick up groceries at a popular supermarket in the resort city, leaving his attaché case behind in his car at the parking lot.
According to Morgan, upon his return to his vehicle after spending about 20 minutes in the supermarket, he discovered that the back window was smashed and that his attaché case, containing valuable legal documents and cash, was missing.
"When me look me briefcase gone, pieces of glass on the back seat-- all me valuable papers that I was taking home to work that night, gone!" Morgan recounted.
In a desperate bid to recover the important documents, Morgan said, he decided to seek the assistance of members of Montego Bay's inner-city communities.
"I said the police not going solve this crime tonight and I want back my documents so I am going to do something unorthodox. I said if it takes me the whole night I am going to go in all inner-city communities in Montego Bay tonight," the attorney recalled.
"I am going to start in the community where I had an office. Is 30 years since I have been practicing law, somebody must know me in these communities, I said to myself, and I am going to appeal that if they see my briefcase I will pay anything to get it back".
Morgan said he then drove into one community where he saw a bunch of young men seated on a wall and quickly told them of his plight. The young men, he said, promised that they would "check it out" and that he should "circle back" in one hour.
The then despondent attorney who obeyed the young men was instructed upon his return to head for a round-a-bout near the parking lot in the vicinity of where the attaché case was stolen. There, they men told him, he would find the stolen item.
Morgan said he reluctantly followed their instructions and was pleasantly surprised when he got to the location.
" There I found the brief case, every striking thing inna it, nothing missing. All the $2,300 was in it, I couldn't believe. I drove back to the supermarket and showed them the brief case, nobody could believe," said Morgan.
