FOR Shurline Perry, it is more than a salary. She believes with all her being that her presence at Jewel Runaway Bay Resort, where she works, will cause the hotel to prosper.
"As long as I am here, this place will prosper. That's how serious I take my job. My job is important because this is my life, my passion," she told the Jamaica Observer North East in a recent interview.
The very dedicated and jovial butler has been in the hotel industry for some 10 years now and believes in "service above self", which means she will go beyond expectations to ensure that guests to the property are satisfied.
Perry, who has been at Jewel Runaway Bay since it opened more than a year ago, started out as a server, but was promoted after three months.
Her role as a butler, she explained, puts her in charge of 12 butler suites on the property. It includes meeting guests and organising various activities during their stay, including off-property excursions.
"I try my best to ensure that they have a great time with us," she stated.
Perry explained that having a great personality is important in carrying out the services of a butler.
"I am a great conversationalist. I am able to engage persons in a conversation; get you talking, get you to open up and get you to do fun stuff," she said.
"I get you to leave with the hope of coming back," she added.
But Perry doesn't only carry out those duties in her job description. If there is something outside her regular duties which needs to be done and she has the time, she will do it.
That hard work and dedication is admired by staff and her human resource manager Lorna Smith-Taylor sang her praises.
"Shurline is one who goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is satisfied," Smith-Taylor said.
"Even though she is a butler, if she goes into the restaurant and the guests need assistance, she jumps right in; she will clear the tables," she added.
As a butler, "she ensures everything is taken care of," Smith-Taylor said.
Perry said she is still in her learning stage but intends to work to become a concierge or butler manager.
Outside of work, the young woman, who is married to Gautet Perry, is dedicated to the development of her home community, Chester, in St Ann, where she's an evangelist, lay preacher and Sunday school teacher.
