May Pen, Clarendon — Bauxite/alumina company Jamalco marked Road Safety Awareness Month in June with a road safety exposition at the Halse Hall Great House aimed at students from primary schools in Clarendon and Manchester as well as taxi operators.

The expo carried the theme 'Save Lives: #SlowDown'.

A news release from the company said activities included a road march and banner parade; a road safety presentation that was conducted by managing director of Grennell's Driving School, Alphanso Grennell; and a cultural expo which highlighted road safety through the performing arts.

Minister of Transport and Mining Member of Parliament for Clarendon Central Mike Henry commended Jamalco for its road safety programme. “To target students and taxi operators is certainly a move in the right direction,” he said. Henry also appealed for unity among drivers and road users, noting that, “We need to unite our efforts to win this war to make our roads, communities, society, and Jamaica safe again.”

Jamalco's road safety programme was developed to assist in reducing road traffic accidents in the company's operating areas in Clarendon and Manchester. The programme, which was formally launched in 2010, includes training in defensive driving for taxi operators, sponsorship of a School Crossing Wardens' Programme at seven schools in the company's operating areas, and the erection of road safety signs along the Hayes Main Road in Clarendon.
