Jamaica Medical Foundation Auction — Providing a lifeline to health

“This evening is basically to celebrate life, and in doing so to try and help organisations which contribute so much good in our country,” shared Jamaica Medical Foundation (JMF) Chairman Michael A Fraser in his welcome address at the JMF Lifeline: Wine, Fashion, and Art Auction, held at the Spanish Court Hotel, on Thursday, July 5.

Fraser lauded the Jamaican healthcare system but expressed the grave need for medical equipment. It is for this reason that the beneficiaries of the fourth staging of the fund-raising auction were the Cardiovascular Unit at the Kingston Public Hospital and the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of the West Indies. Conceptualised by the outreach arm of the Insurance Association of Jamaica, the event's two beneficiaries will equally divide the proceeds.

With a target of $3 million, the evening's guests — Jamaican medical practitioners, representatives from various insurance companies, and art and fashion enthusiasts — rallied in their support of the JMF. Kingston Public Hospital Consultant Cardiologist Dr Camille Christian and University Hospital of the West Indies ICU & Operations Theatre Administrative Manager Barbara Garcia both expressed gratitude for the foundation's support and highlighted how their respective institutions would be using the donations.

The event featured a silent auction in which pieces were donated by various artists and galleries. Hi-Qo Art & Framing Gallery and visual artists Richard Hall, Webster Campbell, Phyll Williams, Albert Huie and the late Barrington Watson (by his widow Doreen) were among the evening's art donors. Stephen Wise of StepWise Entertainment delighted guests with his saxophone skills during the silent auction. This segued into a live auction led by auctioneer Dr Douglas McDonald of art, ceramics and vacations. A weekend for two at Round Hill Hotel and Villas attracted the highest bid of $90,000.

A fashion show coordinated by MaxBrown Luxury Menswear Managing Director Sophia Max-Brown and emceed by media personality Debbie Bissoon closed the event. The showcase saw beauty queens, local celebrities, Saint International stars and corporate executives modelling pieces from MaxBrown, House of Neahlis, Uzuri International, Everything Beach, Flirt Boutique, and Eye Q Optical.

Patrons spent a relaxing evening imbibing sips courtesy of wine sponsor Select Brands and sampling fare courtesy of the Spanish Court Hotel while supporting Jamaica's health care system.
