Shaggy's brand not tainted

Amidst the controversy regarding the funds raised by the Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation last year for the Bustamante Hospital for Children, Patrick Roberts, organiser of the annual Ghetto Splash, does not believe Shaggy's brand has been tainted.

“His brand has gotten more credibility. There is no way there could have been any misappropriation of funds because Shaggy was the one who approached the Bustamante Hospital for Children and offered his assistance. His objectives were very clear, so at the end of the day, Shaggy comes out as the real winner. We need more people like Shaggy in Jamaica to give back to the children,” he told the Jamaica Observer's Splash.

Two weeks ago, it was reported that well over one year after the staging of his popular Shaggy And Friends concert, the Bustamante Hospital had yet to benefit from the $100 million dollars raised.

Last Monday, Shaggy held a press conference in Kingston and explained that the funds were secure in a bank account. He dismissed talk of inappropriate behaviour by his team.

Roberts cautions those who insinuate embezzlement of the money by the entertainer.

“It is hard to put on a stage show enuh. It takes so much out of you and your team, and at the end of the day, you're doing it for the benefit of the children; you're not gaining anything. It wouldn't make sense to say you're going to give back and end up taking the funds made. If you are the one to approach the beneficiary, which would be the Bustamante Hospital in this case, why would you need to steal?” he added.

Roberts noted that benefactors require all the support they can get to execute projects. There are monetary challenges to host Ghetto Splash.

“Every year we have difficulties when it comes to sponsorship. This is our 30th anniversary, Ghetto Splash started in Craig Town in 1989 before it moved to Drewsland, where we have been having it for seven years. If it was not for (businessman) Joe Bogdanovich who donates money every year, the event wouldn't be possible...and of course, the artistes who perform for free,” he disclosed.

The misunderstanding with Shaggy's Foundation, Roberts believes, will not be a factor in donations to similar events.

“What happened with Shaggy will not impact whether or not people give back to charities. Shaggy already proved himself. It is just left to people or organisations who want to willingly give back to a good cause. We (Ghetto Splash) have contacted the CHASE Fund as well as the KSAMC (Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation) for sponsorship...and we hope to have Wisynco on board this year again because they have always supported us,” Roberts said.

The last staging of the free concert featured Beenie Man, Popcaan, Aidonia, Dexta Daps, Agent Sasco, Bounty Killer, Wayne Marshall, Spice, Jahfrass, Propa Fade, Govana, Dre Island, Bugle, Nesbeth, Capleton, Tarrus Riley, Peter Metro, Omari, Jah Cure, and Ishawna.
