Tomorrow, Buju Banton is set to be released from federal prison in Georgia. He has been incarcerated in the United States since 2010 for a drug-related crime. Leading up to his release, the Jamaica Observer presents a daily feature on what has transpired in that time with members of his family, friends and colleagues.

A number of artistes have sampled or covered songs from Buju Banton's extensive catalogue in the past seven years. This is usually a nod to the quality of an artiste's work.

His 1994 hit Champion was sampled by pop singer Selena Gomez on her 2013 single Like A Champion. The track was featured on her debut album Stars Dance, which topped the Billboard 200 Albums Chart and sold 1.2 million copies in the United States.

Champion is Buju Banton's biggest hit in the US, peaking at number 67 on the Billboard R&B Hip-Hop Songs chart in 1995. It is on his 1995 album, 'Til Shiloh.

Bonafide Love, a 1992 hit for Banton and Wayne Wonder was sampled in Amor Real, a 2013 song by Latin rapper Gocho featuring Yandel.

Banton's 1993 collaboration with Nadine Sutherland, Wicked Dickie, produced by Donovan Germain, was sampled last year in Major Lazer's G o Dung featuring KES. It is from the EDM kingpins' EP Know no Better which topped the Billboard Reggae Chart.

Love Dem Bad, a 1997 hit for Banton and Red Rat, was sampled in 2013 by rapper Robb Bank$ in his song Flex (City). Me and Oonu, a 2006 recording by Banton, was last year sampled by Damian Marley for the song R.O.A.R.

Hills and Valleys was a monster hit in 1998 for Banton. It is from his album Inna Heights, the long-awaited follow-up to 'Til Shiloh.

In 2015, reggae singer Tiken Jah Fakoly of Cote D'ivoire covered Hills and Valleys.

Canadian duo Shad and DJ T Lo sampled Banton's Til I'm Laid to Rest in their song Always Winnin, released in 2014. Til I'm Laid to Rest is one of the anthems from 'Til Shiloh.
