Friday, September 07, 2012
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Both Bangladesh and Afghanistan warmed up for the World Twenty20 Championship later this month in Sri Lanka with wins in warm-up matches against local sides here Wednesday.
Playing at Shaw Park in Tobago, Bangladesh defeated a Tobago XI by 59 runs while at the National Cricket Centre, Afghanistan got past PowerGen by 35 runs.
The matches were the only warm-up fixtures before Bangladesh and Afghanistan engage in the three-day Twenty20 tournament involving Barbados and hosts Trinidad and Tobago, which bowled off yesterday.
Batting first, Bangladesh rattled up 169 for eight off their allotted overs with Ziaur Rahman top-scoring with 34 and Mushfiqur Rahim getting 32, while Zunaed Siddique chipped in with 27.
Tobago were then limited to 110 for eight with former T&T with seamer Shafiul Islam taking two for 13.
At the NCC, Karem Sadiq hammered 51 to fire the Afghans up to 173 for four off their 20 overs.
Nawroz Mangal followed up with 44 while Gulbadin Naib cracked 35.
National player Sherwin Ganga then stroked 42 off 40 balls and opener Nicholas Sookdeosingh smashed 34 off 24 balls, but it was not enough to prevent their team from defeat.
Bangladesh were set to face Barbados in the opening game of the tournament at Queen's Park yesterday before Afghanistan clash with T&T in the feature game of the double-header.
Following the tournament, both teams will head to the WT20 which runs from September 18 to October 7.
