MONTEGO BAY, St James — Catherine Hall All-Stars won their second straight Flow National Basketball League-West title on Thursday night with a big 76-73 upset win over the previously unbeaten Granville Jaguars at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts.
Despite Dave Black, Lemardo Gobault and Leroy Lawrence combing for 56 points, it was the all-round team strength of the Catherine Hall team that gave them the edge in what was a close game from start to finish, with the teams exchanging leads.
Catherine Hall came into the game as underdogs after three straight losses in the regular season to the Granville team including a humiliating 38 points 102-64 third round beat down in the third round.
Granville, who will advance with Catherine Hall and third-placed MoBay Hoopers to the National Play-offs, are still seeking their first title after they were beaten last year, 2-1, in the best-of-three finals by Catherine Hall.
The teams were tied at 11-all after the first quarter before Catherine Hall, who were led by Vaughn Corke and Goyan Malcolm's 18 points each, took a seven-point lead at half-time, 32-25.
Granville came out in the third quarter with all guns firing and outscored All-stars, 30-18, to take a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but that was when Catherine Hall's determination came out and responded with and 26-18 margin for the final three-point victory.
In addition t his 18 points, Corke had eight rebounds, four steals and five assists. Malcolm had six rebounds and three steals; Marvin Powell scored 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Jermaine Rerrie had a double-double — 10 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and four steals.
Black had a game-high 21 points for Granville; Gobault scored 18 points, seven rebounds two blocks and four steals; Lawrence scored 17 points, had 11 rebounds and two steals, while Andrew Whilby scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds, three steals and three assists.
