Class 4 Boys still barred from Champs

Sunday, March 07, 2010

A category of events for Class 4 boys at the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Boys and Girls Athletic Championships is not likely to happen anytime soon as administrators struggle to define the term, Champs committee chairperson Colleen Montague told the Sunday Observer.

There are events geared towards Class 4 or Under-12 girls, but events for boys start only at Class 3 at the annual high school track and field meet.

"It's something we have continued to debate... but there is still no conclusion; we've not been able to arrive at an agreement where the Class 4 for boys are concerned," Montague said in a recent interview with the Sunday Observer.

"The age is the issue," she added. "It's brought up every now and again in a meeting, but we still have not been able to arrive at a consensus."

ISSA have included a 1500m race for Class 3 boys at Champs this year, though a number of other events which are contested by girls are not included. The Javelin is also listed on the programme for this year.

".. In saying that we've been able to include those events, I'm sure, going forward, we will continue to review all of these things because it's not cast in stone," Montague said.
