Clyde presented as 2014 Commonwealth Games mascot
Saturday, September 22, 2012
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Forget about the cuddly animals. The mascot for the next Commonwealth Games is a prickly plant with a cheeky face and daring character.
A green thistle called Clyde was presented Thursday as the face of the 2014 Games in Glasgow, a significant change by competition organisers who have always previously had an animal as the official mascot.
Complete with a purple Mohican, Clyde is described as patriotic and adventurous and is named after the river that runs through the city. The thistle is a national emblem of Scotland.
Rebecca Adlington, the 2008 Olympic swimming champion who is an ambassador for the games, says Clyde "was an instant hit and his cheeky character was clear for all to see. He's already a star."
The games will run from July 23-August 3.
