Commanding Chief ‘Seeks’ Exercise Book Trophy
Hurbun Williams
Saturday, August 25, 2012
The sixth running of the $1,000,000 Seek Exercise Book Trophy will headline a well-supported 12-race card sponsored by Book Empire at Caymanas Park today.
Each of the other 11 races will bear the name of products of Book Empire as the day serves as a big give-away to parent-punters who will be provided with a total of 2,000 copybooks and a number of other back-to-school items.
Commanding Chief, who proved no real match for the American-bred colt Mismyrtleboyrichie going 1,600 metres on July 14, will seek redemption when the son of War Marshall takes on a less august field of Open Allowance, three-year-olds upward, over 1,300 metres in the Seek Exercise Book feature set for approximately 5:25 pm. First post is at 11:45 pm.
A winner of two of his three races for the season, Commanding Chief, a four-year-old chestnut gelding by War Marshall out of She Knows (Beau Genius) bred by Paul Chen and owned by Doks Stables, has more than a useful chance of returning to the winner's enclosure forthwith.
However, despite looking to be well prepared by trainer Everal Francis for this sprint with jockey Paul Francis again doing duty, Commanding Chief will be tested to the hilt in the presence of some very sharp dashers over short distance races.
Only the very best have been able to defeat last year's St Leger winner, but giving weight all round to his most potent rivals, Jet Setter, Reasonable Press, Go Go Yvonne, along with Palace Guard and the American-bred bay/brown colt Rio Cobre.
The ageing Mr Skill also carrying 57.0kg is the joint top weight with Commanding Chief, but this seven-year-old bay gelding is no back number, and while he is not expected to win, he will not be idle under Richard Mairs. Looks fit and well in recent dashes, and if allowed to dictate terms unmolested from in front, Mr Skill could hurt the chances of the favourite.
The light weighted Rio Cobre trained by champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta, looks a potential danger coming in at a mere 51.0kg for the 3.0kg claiming apprentice Conrod Ellis.
