Couples charity golf event nets $1.4m

Thursday, January 24, 2013

APPROXIMATELY $1.4 million was raised at the 12th Annual Couples Resorts Jamaica Charity Golf Tournament which was held at the Sandals Golf & Country Club in Upton, St Mary, on Sunday.

All proceeds are to benefit the Port Maria Hospital, the Three Hills Primary and Hamilton Mountain Basic Schools, as well as the Animal House Jamaica.

A total of 100 players — the highest number ever, surpassing the 70-mark from the previous year, participated in the two-man, scramble format, with participants being local players from across the island, and the remainder being repeat guests at the hotel chain.

At the end of the contest, Dave Wagner and Nick Borie emerged overall winners with a score of 60.75. They were followed home by Michael Wilmot and Zandra Roy with a score of 61.

Dudley Wilson and Opeton Marshall (61.5) were third, ahead of Sean and Gwen Wakely, who carded a similar score. Fifth place went to another couple — Mark and Teri Morante with a score of 62.

The first-place winners captured the top prize of a three-night stay in a suite at a Couples Resort in Barbados; second-placed winners were rewarded with two-night stays in a suite at a Couples Resort in Jamaica; third-placed winner, two nights in a gardenview room at a Couples Resort in Jamaica; fourth-placed won a day pass for two and two complimentary spa treatment at a Couples Resort Spa, and the fifth-placed winners complimentary excursions, courtesy of Dolphin Cove and Chukka Adventures.

Digicel, the main sponsor, also provided Huawei Media Pads to Cindy Douglas and Abe Klassen, winners of the closest to the pin contests, while Greg Chong won a gift basket, compliments of Caribbean Products, for being victorious in the putting contest.
