Saturday, September 29, 2012
The Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) in association with the NHT Sports Club and Petrojam Limited will be staging the 10th edition of the Dr Harold Chan Chess Open at the NHT Sports Club in New Kingston this weekend.
The tournament will be divided into three sections — Open, Intermediate and Amateur. Prizes will be awarded to the top three players in each section — the best Under 8, 10, 12 and 14-year-old players, best rural player, best female player, best junior and best new player.
The Open section will be rated by the world governing body for chess, FIDE.
The tournament, formerly called the Summer Open, was renamed in 2003 in honour of Dr Harold Chan who was one of the first three individuals to earn the title of National Master in Jamaica in 1975. Chan also won the Jamaica National Chess Championship titles from 1972-74 and 1978-79.
The defending Champion is National Master Damion Davy.
