Excelsior, Calabar for Group H Manning Cup feature
BY SANJAY MYERS Observer staff reporter
Monday, October 29, 2012
Former champions Excelsior High and 2005 winners Calabar High are set to square off at 3:00 pm today in the feature Group H match at the Constant Spring Complex in second round of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup competition.
The curtain-raiser at the venue will see lesser-fancied teams Spanish Town High and Donald Quarrie High do battle at 1:00 pm.
Excelsior High, who won back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004, suffered a surprising 0-1 defeat to minnows Greater Portmore High in the preliminary phase but recovered handily to top Group A.
The Leebert Halliman-coached team progressed to the Walker Cup Knockout semi-final and put on an encouraging display before losing out to Jamaica College on penalty shoot-out.
Calabar were less consistent in the first round and finished a close second to Bridgeport High in Group D, but possess enough talent to unsettle the Excelsior team in what is likely to be a tight contest.
In the opening match, Spanish Town, who ended at the summit of Group E in the first round, will start as slight favourites to get the better of a Donald Quarrie outfit, which finished second to Walker Cup finalists Wolmer's Boys' in Group F.
