High-riding Harbour View seek further success against Tivoli Gardens

Sunday, February 24, 2013

Fresh off tucking away their second title of the season in midweek, high-riding Harbour View will look to extend their 10-point lead over Portmore United, who will be idle in today's Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) fixture.

Harbour View, the second end-of-round winners, captured the Jamaica Yellow Pages/KSAFA Jackie Bell Knockout title with a penalty shoot-out victory over Boys' Town, who had defeated them in the RSPL first end-of-round final.

The 'Stars of the East', who are on 51 points, journey to the Edward Seaga Complex to take on home team Tivoli Gardens at 5:00 pm. The hosts are in the unfamiliar position of ninth place with 28 points, just five points and two places above the dreaded relegation zone.

Such has been Tivoli Gardens' woes this season; they have managed just seven wins, as against seven draws and 10 losses in their 24 matches to date.

On the other, hand Harbour View have been on a roll. The Vin Blaine-coached aggregation has notched up a league-high 15 wins, six draws, as well as another league-best three defeats with 38 strikes and 11 against.

The leaders will be without inspirational midfield ace Jermaine Hue, who sits out today after being ejected for an incident in last Sunday's game against cellar-dwellers Savanna SC at Frome.

Despite the 23-point gap, encounters between the two clubs have always been close and this one is expected to be no different. In their first-round meeting at the same venue, Tivoli Gardens came from behind to earn a 2-2 result, and in the second-round meeting at the Harbour View Compound, the two teams were still inseparable, ending 1-1, with the visitors again coming from behind.

Harbour View have been upgraded in the January transfer window, with the addition of Xavian Virgo from Boys' Town, Brian Brown from Montego Bay United, and Nickoy Christian from Portmore United. They have also seen the return of Dicoy Williams from MLS outfit Toronto FC, as well as Andre Fagan and Richard Edwards, who had gone overseas. They should hold too many punches for the home side today.

Boys' Town, who have been inconsistent all season, as evidenced by their fifth place with 37 points, play host to Sporting Central Academy (8th place with 29 points) at 3:00 pm, looking to get their season back on track, and most importantly, to cement their place in the 'top six' for the final round.

Cavalier, in seventh place on 34 points, welcome the down-and-out Savannah SC (12th place on 16 points) at 5:00 pm, at a time when they seek to add three valuable points and ease their relegation fears, while fourth-placed team Arnett Gardens (37 points) visit St Mary's Highgate United (11th place with 24 points) at 3:00 pm, hoping to secure maximum points as they inch towards second place in the standing.

Humble Lion, in 10th place on 28 points, will host Montego Bay United (third place with 37 points) at Effortville Community Centre at 3:00 pm in what could be the most evenly-contested game of the afternoon.

Tomorrow at 9:00 pm in the Red Stripe Premier League Monday Night Football live CVM TV game, Portmore United host Waterhouse at Ferdie Neita Park in a very tricky encounter for the host. Should Harbour View continue on their successful path against Tivoli Gardens, then Portmore United would be under immense pressure to match that result, if the league is to remain competitive.
