Injury ousts Asafa from Stockholm clash

Thursday, August 05, 2010

THE mouthwatering men's 100 metres Diamond League showdown in Stockholm, Sweden tomorrow between the world's three fastest men took a nosedive yesterday following news that Asafa Powell has withdrawn due to injury.

Meet's organisers say Powell -- who was slated to face world record-holder Usain Bolt and American Tyson Gay in what would have been the first meeting of the three since last year's World Championships in Berlin -- suffered a groin injury at the Paris meet a few weeks ago.

The former world record-holder has since suffered additional setbacks and according to his management team, while the injury healed over the past few days, a back and hamstring injury problem have seen the Jamaican suffering from "tightness and severe pain".

The Observer has learnt that as a result of the initial injury Powell was unable to train for some 10 days after the Paris Diamond League meeting. Reports say that the pain has subsided over the past week and Powell has been progressing at a slow rate.

"This morning, Asafa tested himself with starts from blocks and was just unable to push from the blocks without severe pain," said a statement yesterday from Doyle Management Group, the firm which represents Powell.

"He has improved over the course of the past week but is still not at a level where he could attempt a race," the statement further said.

Meanwhile, Powell said he was "devastated" at his inability to compete in the much anticipated clash against his rivals tomorrow.

"I am absolutely devastated," Powell was quoted as saying on the IAAF website last night.

"I was really looking forward to the race against Usain and Tyson. This year I have been running very well and I was hoping that I would be in the race with a solid chance to win, but with the way my back and legs have been feeling I know it would be difficult to even finish the race," he added.

Here we go again, I guess we will never see a race involving the three fastest men presently unless its a major championship.

I was looking for the race Asafa, anyway get well and get ready for Tyson Gay as soon as possible.
You have something to settle with the American. We want to know if its You or Tyson the second fastest man on planet earth ?
The world already knows that King Bolt have you and Tyson Gay fighting for second place at all times.

Safa bwoy, this is not good! We really hope you are not injured as they say you are. I would rather you were simply just been scared as it would be quite understandable. My advice Asafa is that you accept that you are now the third best in the world and therefore should relax now and just hope to upset Gaye.
