What is anticipated to be a mouth watering clash for approximately $6,500,000 in the Supreme Ventures Limited-sponsored annual ultra-rich Two-Year-Old Racing Series will begin at Caymanas Park today with the 9th running of the Cash Pot "Only One For Me" Trophy for a purse of $2,950,000.
Six runners — four colts and two fillies — are expected to face the starter in the Graded Stakes event and the filly Princess Popstar has showed herself to start as the overwhelming favourite going 1,200 metres.
Her major rivals are expected to be the high priced Boy Wonder, who opened his career on a winning note over today's distance with a decent time of 1:14 minutes flat, Golden Bullet and Insane Bolt themselves winners.
The Cash Pot "Only For Me" highlighter of the 11-race card is the penultimate race on the programme that is scheduled to go to post at approximately 4:40 pm with first post at noon.
This is the most promising group of two-year-olds to participate in this the opening race of the SVL Triple Series for some time now, especially with all being winners with the filly Princess Popstar being the most impressive.
Prepared for the races by eminent and 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny for owners 2 Penyu, Princess Popstar is by Adore The Gold out of Doc's Paladin (Boundary) and bred at Ham Stables and will come to the wicket well prepared.
Princess Popstar is a half sister to last years Derby winner Typewriter and the expectation for her to go on to emulate him seems quit high among knowledgeable pundits. Typewriter was never raced as a two-year-old, but the Adore the Gold filly is making an early start to her career and has already shown promise.
It is true that on debut she did not beat much, but since then she has gone from strength to strength in her preparation on the track and being bred for a distance of ground and imbued with such good speed, the expectation is that she is poised to upstage the boys, although riding the bends for the first time in a competitive situation.
Former champion jockey Percy Williams, who won with the filly on debut, will again have the call.
Of her four male rivals the pricey Boy Wonder ridden by leading jockey Omar Walker, and trained Ian Parsard looks her main threat, having also worked sweetly coming into the first leg of the SVL Triple Series. And like Princess Popstar, has only ran once and was a winner.
Owned by Curragh Jamaica Agency and bred by Richard Azan, Ian Parsard & Paradice Racing, Boy Wonder is a chestnut colt by Traditional out of Jamaica Dream (Southern Halo) and was bought back at the Yearling Sale for a price of $3,000,000.
Another who is expected to come at them in the drive is the Anthony Nunes-trained Golden Bullet, who is from fairly good pedigree, being a bay colt by Western Classic out of the well-bred mare Wap (Victory Gallop) bred by Everglades Farms Ltd.
Owned by Wilbert Bagwandeen, Trevor Dunkley Snr, Elias Haloute & Stephan Narinesingh, Golden Bullet clearly has ability and should be in the heat of battle under Shane Ellis when the wire begins to loom large.
So too will be the Wayne DaCosta-trained Insane Bolt, who won his last race going 100 metres shorter in runner-away fashion and with much in hand. It is a known fact that runners from the Golden Olympio mares are noted short runners, but this Insane Bolt, as his name suggests, and the manner of his victory on last, could be something much better than we are accustomed to, being a gelded son of Shuffling Maddnes, a promising young stallion who is now deceased.
Owned by Welsford Sinclair and Raymond Rousseau, he has trained well coming into the event and ridden by the former champion jockey, Panamanian Dick Cardenas, Insane Bolt will be among the front runners for the top prize when this is being decided.
