THE governing body of local athletics is to be re-christened.

The Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association which has retained that name since it was formed in 1932, is to become the Jamaica Athletic Administrative Association, thereby retaining the acronym JAAA.

JAAA president Howard Aris told the Sunday Observer the move, which is in the final stages of ratification, is in keeping with the other athletics bodies around the world.

"It's no longer an amateur sport," Aris said.

The world governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations, changed its name from the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 2001.
