THE Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA) will be electing a new leader when it stages its AGM at the JaVA Office at the National Arena Complex next week Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
The incumbent, Major Warrenton Dixon, has opted not to seek re-election citing greater focus on career, family and personal goals.
Major Dixon, who has been at the helm of JaVA for the past four years, stated that he notified the volleyball community in August 2013 that he will not be able to commit the quality, time, thought and effort required of the president of the association due to the necessary and immediate shift and prioritisation of his focus.
He further encouraged the constituents to seek a suitable replacement, even though at that time he stated that he would make himself available to continue to serve if necessary.
"I have not received a formal nomination so I can't state the name of the person, but someone told me that he intends to run for the office of president of JaVA and I am supportive of this intent," said Major Dixon.
"In the brief moment he worked with me on the management committee I found him to be a very effective individual with real potential to take JaVA forward and that is all I desire — someone I feel comfortable handing over "my baby" to. I'm not abandoning JaVA though. I will offer myself to the new administration to serve as a junior member of the management committee. I have been there and know how difficult it is to find suitable persons to fill the management committee positions, so since the primary-level schools programme has been near and dear to my heart, I will offer to serve as the schools development manager. I believe I should be able to take on a lesser responsibility like this."
The other executive positions that will be voted on at next week's AGM are those of general secretary and treasurer. The JaVA constitution allows for nominations from the floor on the day of the AGM. No other nominations or indications of intent has been received by JaVA.
