PETER McMaster's American imported filly Jah Love with a light impost looks a prime candidate to win the $715,000 Kenneth Mattis OD Trophy feature at Caymanas Park today.
However, stablemate Nyabinghi, Pete'swildone and last but not least Kal Kal are themselves ripened to fill the breach.
The Overnight Allowance (three year olds upward) going 2,000 metres and highlighter of an extensive 12-race card has attracted a competitive field of 10 runners. The Kenneth Mattis Trophy race is set to go to post at approximately 5:00 pm with first post at noon.
All 10 runners are capable of going the challenging two-turn circuit, and despite a liking for one runner over the other, the race looks open with top-weighted Pete'swildone, although attempting the trip for the first time could get the better of the more seasoned runners.
Fresh from a good victory among restricted company, the three-year-old bay colt by Gimmeawink out of Wild In Manila (Wild Rush) and bred by Dr DW Frazier in the USA seems to be a progressive type and even though stepping up to Overnight Allowance this heavy is expected to give a good account of himself. Well trained for the challenge by Ian Parsard for owner PJK Team, Pete'swildone will be ridden by jockey Richard Mitchell.
Jah Love, who is a great lover of two-turn events, will definitely enjoy the pace shape of the Kennett Mattis and like stablemate the five year-old chestnut mare Nyabinghi, Uncle Donny and Kal Kal another invader from the USA, who is bred for distances such as this, and will be putting forward their best work in the closing stages.
Owned by Miss Suckie and trained by Peter McMaster, Jah Love finished a good third behind Sweet Trail and Nyabinghi going short of her best at 1,500 metres on last. When the stable-mates met on last Jah Love was the heavier. Today however there is a weight swing in favour of Jah Love and the expectation is that so will be their positioning now going farther. Aaron Chatrie who rode Jah Love on last will now be aboard Nyabinghi to come in at 53.0kg while little brother the 4.0kg claiming apprentice Rajiv Chatrie, has the leg up on Jah Love to coming at about 50.0kg.
The Wayne DaCosta prepared Kal Kal with Dick Cardenas astride has been begging for a distance such as this for sometime and now that she gets it could easily turn her dismal four-year-old form around and get it off to a winning start after seven outings.
Gallant efforts are also in store from ageing warriors, the in-form Classic Beau with Clive Lynch in the saddle and the former Superstakes winner Hombre with premier reins man, Winston Griffiths astride. Both have accumulated 27 wins between them with several over today's distance.
