Jamaican tally increases to 21 medals at CAC Games

JAMAICA's medal tally was up to 21 at press time yesterday after nine days of competition at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Sheree Francis claimed a silver in the women's high jump after clearing the bar at 1.91m. St Lucia's Levern Spencer earned the top spot with a leap of 1.94m.

Tanice Barnett posted a personal best time of 4:31.23, as she finished eighth in the women's 1,500m won by Colombia's Rosibel Garcia in 4:21.17.

Zara Northover threw a personal best 17.04m and was in second position in the women's shot put, while Nadia Alexander was way down in the pack after throwing 15.18m.

The black, green and gold-wearing Jamaicans added two more bronze medals to their tally on Sunday.

The men's squash team claimed third spot in team competition, while in athletics, Lerone Clarke posted 10.15 seconds for third in the men's 100m ahead of countryman Oshane Bailey 10.20, as the Netherlands Antilles Churandy Martina claimed the event in 10.07 seconds ahead of Antigua's Daniel Bailey, 10.08.

Audra Segree clocked a pedestrian 11.83 seconds for eighth place in the women's 100m won by the Tahesia Harrigan of the British Virgin Islands in 11.19.

Meanwhile, Peaches Roach (4,934pts) and Tammilee Kerr (4,648pts) were in first and third positions with one event, the 800m, remaining in the women's heptathlon.

Mark Lewis and Dany Wilson saw their chances of qualifying for next year's Pan American Games slowly slipping away after crashing to their second and third defeats in Beach Volleyball.

They first lost to Recio and Perez of the Dominican Republic 21-16, 21-15 and were then beaten by Guevara and Villega of Costa Rica, 19-21, 23-21, 15-13.

The female hockey team, who needed a victory for a shot at the quarter-finals, were handed a 1-0 beating by the Dominican Republic.

Cyclist Marloe Rodman clocked 14.532 minutes for third in the preliminaries of the men's omnium sprint 250 tt and earned 41 points in the points event. He will return to the track today in the omnium Individual Pursuit.

Meanwhile, Jamaica were in the final of several other events up to press time.

Clora Williams and Allodin Fothergill were in the finals of the respective women's and men's 400m.

The men's basketball team were down to face their Puerto Rican counterparts at 8:30 pm.

Jovan Young was to face Sony Arnaud Jr of Haiti in a men's middleweight 75 kilogramme boxing match-up, while Phillip Bowes was due to take on Juan Pablo Romero of Mexico in the 64kg light-welterweight division.

Jamaicans will also be in action in table tennis, hockey and basketball today.

Yvonne Foster, Ashli Alexander and Kristen McKenzie will take on opponents from Venezuela, Guatemala, and Mexico in women's singles, while Simon Tomlinson, Joseph Dibbs and Peter Moo Young will face El Savadoran, Colombian and Venezuelan opposition. The local players will face Mexico in both hockey and basketball men's group action.
