Jason Walter on top in EFJ Super League
Saturday, July 09, 2011
Jason Walter and his mount Shambal won the Equestrian Federation of Jamaica (EFJ) Super Jumping League last Saturday at the Kingston Polo Club and Equestrian Centre.
This was his second win in Super League competition. Sixteen-year-old Walter is one of only three local competitors who have taken on the challenge to jump the 1.30m obstacles. This is the first year in the EFJ's history that local riders are competing at this height.
When asked about the elevated level of competition Walter stated: "I am glad that we are now this level as it will make us more competitive on the international jumping circuits."
The highly anticipated competition had a slight delay due to rain showers and lightening but the intervention from above actually improved the footing in the sand ring at the venue.
Walter ended the day with nine faults ahead of Adam Lake riding Alex with 19 faults and Gabby Ralston riding Miss Fran with 26 faults. Walter leads the Super League with 24 points, two ahead of Adam Lake and 13 ahead of Gabby Ralston.
Frankie Chin and her mount Jiggy also gave the audience another great performance with her second win in the High League. Jumping obstacles 1.10m, Chin accumulated eight faults safely ahead of Justin Vaz on Casanova with 16 faults and Trina deLisser on Otis with 17 faults. Chin leads the High League with 24 points, two ahead of Justin Vaz and four ahead of Trina deLisser.
Activity in the Medium League (0.95m) has been fierce since the start of the jumping season with 10 horse and rider combinations competing for the top prize. Sara Misir, the exciting rider of Trelawny, rebounded from a difficult ride in the first competition at the start of the season to gain first place with no faults in a fast 56.31 seconds.
In second place was Brianna Schwapp on Appeal, with a speed round time of 57.69 seconds, ahead of Shelby Wildish, who rode She's All That in 59.38 seconds. Trina deLisser on Ashes leads the Medium League with 19 points, just one ahead of Alex Chin on Gemini and two ahead of Sayan Johnston on Domino.
Victoria Jones on Stormy topped the Low League (0.8m) with no faults in 63.24 seconds, ahead of the careful Claire Schwapp on Goofy, who has not accumulated any jumping faults after four rounds this season. Schwapp completed the speed round in 64.18 seconds ahead of the third-placed finisher Alex Chin on Hanna, who completed the course in 64.06 seconds, but with four jumping faults. Chin and Schwapp are currently tied for first place on 22 points, just one point ahead of Jones.
