KPMG squash tourney set for Thursday start

Saturday, February 11, 2012

Eighty players on 20 teams will vie for top honours at the 11th Annual KPMG Squash League Tournament which starts next Thursday.

Defending champions, The Travoltas, head up the roster of the prestigious tournament which is among the most popular local squash competitions. The team — made up of 13-time All Jamaica Men's Champion, Wayne Burrowes, Warren Burrowes and Joey Levy — is strongly tipped to retain their title.

However, before they can raise the trophy again, the Travoltas will have to fight off stiff competition from two-time runners up Milex Eagles and the University of Technology.

The KPMG League is one of the only local tournaments to use a handicap format which gives players at all levels a strong chance of winning the title. The handicap structure makes for highly competitive matches even if a national champion is up against a low ranking player.

Partner at KPMG, Patrick Chin, says his company " is really pleased to be involved with this tournament for the 11th consecutive year".

"We continue to see the emergence of new players, we are encouraged by the progress of the teams who continue to compete each year, we are happy to promote and develop local squash and we always have a lot of fun," said Chin as he addressed the launch of the competition at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Thursday.

The tournament will be played over eight weeks at three Corporate Area venues — the Liguanea Club, Constant Spring Golf Club and the University of Technology.

Matches will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
