Lambert, McCarthy lead Ja to win over CCC

J’can skipper Lambert, McCarthy combine to beat CCC

Title-holders Jamaica made it two wins in as many matches in the 2013 Regional Super50 campaign after a laborious four-wicket win over the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) at the Sabina Park ground yesterday.

The Jamaica team, who comfortably defeated Barbados two weeks ago in Bridgetown, bowled out the CCC for 157 on a sluggish batting surface and reached 158-6 to attain victory with four overs and four balls to spare.

Scores: Combined Campuses 157 (48 overs); Jamaica 158-6 (45.2 overs).

Captain Tamar Lambert scored a patient 34 off 65 balls in Jamaica's chase to complete a decent all-round effort and was handed the player of the match award, while middle-order batsman Andre McCarthy struck a polished 45.

McCarthy told the Jamaica Observer after the match that he was disappointed he did not bat to the end.

"I batted well but I'm not pleased because I should have scored 70 to 80 runs and bring my team to victory. I guess I have to take it stage by stage and learn from this," the 25-year-old said.

Earlier the CCC took first strike, but slumped to 15-2 as openers Shacoya Thomas (six) and Chadwick Walton (six) fell cheaply to the bowling of experienced pacer Andrew Richardson.

Thomas went after edging a short, lifting delivery to wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh, while Walton advanced down the wicket and wafted loosely outside the off-stump to be caught at first slip by Lambert.

CCC captain Kyle Corbin (24) and player/coach Floyd Reifer (32) rebuilt the innings in a solid stand of 55, before the former was craftily lured down the wicket by left-arm spinner Nikita Miller to be stumped by Baugh.

The 40-year-old Reifer was joined by his nephew Raymon Reifer but the family partnership lasted only 18 runs when the veteran left-hander was given out leg before wicket to wrist-spinner Odean Brown at 78-4 in the 26th over.

Nicholas Alexis batted positively for 20 before he was caught in the deep by Nkrumah Bonner off Lambert's bowling and Raymon Reifer (15) gave Brown his second wicket of the match as the CCC slumped to 114-6 in the 36th over.

The remaining four wickets fell for the addition of a further 43 runs as Jamaica tightened the screws on the visitors.

Miller benefitted from the spinner-friendly pitch and was the main wicket-taker with 3-27 off his allotted 10 overs, while Richardson, Brown and Lambert all chipped in with two wickets a-piece.

In reply, Jamaica also got off to a poor start, losing Jermaine Blackwood (0) and opening match centurion Bonner (0) with just one on the board.

Blackwood went first when he nonchalantly drove a full delivery from seamer Kevin McClean into the hands of Floyd Reifer at wide mid-on.

Bonner, who batted at number three, seemed disappointed when he was adjudged to be lbw to a full delivery from left-arm spinner Derone Davis.

Former national youth player McCarthy then steadied proceedings with left-handed opener Simon Jackson (21) during a partnership worth 55 before the latter was caught by wicketkeeper Walton off the bowling of aggressive left-arm seamer Raymon Reifer.

McCarthy, playing in his second Regional 50-overs match, was particularly pleasant to watch during his 66 deliveries, inclusive of four sweetly timed fours and two flowing sixes.

The highlight of his knock was a methodical attack in Davis' sixth over when the Melbourne CC batsman cracked two fours and a six.

He was eventually dismissed when he unwisely played back to finger-spinner Ryan Austin and was trapped lbw.

Lambert, who was dropped at mid-wicket by Corbin on 26, and David Bernard (28) pushed Jamaica close to the finish line before Carlton Baugh with an unbeaten 18 and Nikita Miller, not out on one, completed the win.

The impressive Reifer led the CCC bowling with 2-25 off eight overs.

Corbin, who was seeing his team falling to their second straight defeat, lamented the below-par batting effort.

"The pitch was not conducive to a lot of stroke play, but I don't think we batted well and we just didn't get enough runs in the end," he said.
