Meadows dent Newlands semi-finals hope with 6-1 spanking

HAYES, Clarendon -- Newlands' bid for a place in the last four of the South Central Confederation Super League was dealt a devastating blow on Sunday, as they were thrashed 1-6 by the already-qualified Meadows FC in a third-round Group B match at the Albion Oval.

Going into the fixture, Newlands were third in the group on 17 points -- the same as second-placed Monymusk, but with an inferior goal average and could have strengthened their semi-finals bid with a win.

They, however, met up on solid opposition from their fellow St Catherine team and a 13-minute collapse saw them being 1-4 down inside 50 minutes.

Ross Burton opened the scoring for Meadows on 37 minutes, before Jason Vassell (40th) and Devon Francis (42nd) gave the Super League debutants a 3-0 cushion at the interval.

Two minutes into the second-half, Newlands shot themselves back into contention when Sasha Welch reduced the deficit to two goals with 47th minute strike.

But, any glimmer of hope that they had would quickly disappear when Jason Vassell put the game to rest with his second of the afternoon, three minutes later. Tahilie Gordon and Derrick Pryce completed the rout in the 89th and 90th minutes, respectively.

In other matches played at the weekend, last year's beaten finalist Bodles suffered a shock 0-2 defeat against relegation strugglers Hillstars at Cobbla in another Group B match.

Over in Group A, former champions Naggo Head assumed pole position with a 4-1 spanking of Wood Hall at the Tuners Oval. They are now two points clear of second-placed Tru-Juice, who have a game in hand.

At the Wembly Sports Club, a brace from schoolboy Desharn Brown kept Downs' dream of a semi-final appearance alive, as they blanked Original Hazard 2-0 to draw level on points with Tru-Juice, who have a better goal difference.
