Mico march on in Garrell KO

Friday, October 12, 2012
AFTER ousting defending champions GC Foster College on Saturday in the first round of the Greg Garrell KO football competition, The Mico University College stopped last season's beaten finalists College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) 1-0 in Portland on Tuesday.
Damone Downer delivered the knockout blow in the 17th-minute.
CASE, with the home advantage, started on the attack through Moghate Duncan, Travis Rowe and Bryan Segree.
However, after soaking up the early pressure, the Miconians effectively countered through Premier League star Rosario Harriott, Andre Beckford, Giovanni Baxter and Vaughn Griffiths.
Mico sounded the death knell when Mikhal Jones moved down the right flank and crossed to Downer, who climbed high and headed past a helpless Cordel Gygles in goal to silence the home supporters.
Both teams launched a number of attacks thereafter, but Mico were reduced to 10 players when referee Dave Martin sent the wily Harriott for an early shower for his second bookable offence in the 45th minute as the half ended with the Marescaux Road boys marginally ahead.
The second period saw CASE launching a series of assaults through Segree, Lennox Whyte, Duncan and Carlington Dodd. Mico replied through substitute Alrick Morgan, Downer and Jones as CASE failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
In other results, University of Technology (UTech) edged University of the West Indies (UWI), 1-0; Bethlehem Teachers' College got by Church Teachers' College, 4-3 on penalties after playing to a 1-1 draw, and Moneague College defeated Portmore Community College 3-2 on penalties after also playing to a 1-1 tie.
