No Sir! CONMEBOL denies president asked for knighthood

AP

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) — South American football's governing body has denied media reports in England that its president asked for a knighthood in return for supporting the English bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

CONMEBOL spokesman Nestor Benitez told The Associated Press that the claims against Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay in the Daily Mirror yesterday are "pure fantasy".

Benitez says Leoz told all the bid committees that South America would support Spain.

Russia was ultimately chosen as the 2018 host in December's FIFA vote.

Prince William also reportedly invited Leoz to his wedding, but the president wrote to turn down the offer because the April 29 date clashed with CONMEBOL's biannual congress at which he was re-elected for the sixth time.
