Reid fails in long jump at Euros

Sunday, July 01, 2012

DESPITE a season's best 7.73m in the qualifying rounds of the European Championships in Helsinki, Finland on Friday, former Jamaican representative Julian Reid is still short of the qualifying standard for the Olympic Games later this year.

After a less-than-impressive performance at the United Kingdom finals last week, Reid, who transferred allegiance last year, was selected to take part in the European Championships but failed to get past the first round after his three jumps.

The former Wolmer's Boys' jumped 7.37m, 7.73m and 7.40m in the first round as only one of the three British athletes, JJ Jegede, qualified for the finals set for today's final day.

Reid, who represented the UK at the World University Games in China last year, leaped 7.54m at the UK Trials in Birmingham to finish seventh, but with only one UK athlete, Greg Rutherford, having at least the minimum Olympic qualifying standards, he is among the others trying to get on the team.
