MAGGOTTY, St Elizabeth — Former champions and last season's beaten finalists St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) got off to a winning start in the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup competition after edging Maggotty, 1-0, in Zone G at Maggotty yesterday.
Khesanio Hall's first-half goal got coach Omar Wedderburn's stint off on a positive note as they maintained their unbeaten run against Maggotty.
Meanwhile, there were two hat-tricks yesterday. Oshane Powell led Holmwood Technical to a 5-2 win over Knox College and Kasheif Brown led Green Pond to a 3-victory against Maldon.
Powell, along with Collin Williams and Jeimel Muirhead, who got one goal each for the Dave Anderson-coached team, helped snap a 14-game winless run dating to 2009.
In another group game, Spalding beat Christiana, 3-1.
At Green Pond, Brown scored three times — in the 13th, 20th and 24th minutes — for their first-ever win over Maldon in their first clash since the 2008 season. Shane Haughton pulled one back in the second half for Maldon.
National Under-17 player Ramon Brown scored a double for Muschett who beat Hopewell High, 4-1, in Hopewell. Romaine Williams and Lawrence Stone got the other goals.
Twenty-nine more games are scheduled for today. Former champions Frome Technical, Munro College, Garvey Maceo High, Glenmuir High, and Vere Technical will be in action.
