Santos stun Strikers in Women's KO

Sunday, August 19, 2012

KEANA-SHAE Thomas' 58th-minute goal gave underdogs Santos FC a surprise 1-0 victory over mid-season finalists Portmore Strikers in the quarter-final of the Sherwin Williams Colourscape Knock-out at the Bell/Chung Oval yesterday.

The other teams to progress to the semi-finals are GC Foster College, Barbican and Waterhouse.

At Bell/Chung, the hosts deservedly went ahead 13 minutes after the interval when a mix-up between goalkeeper Carole Kelly and the defence allowed Thomas to score.

The Carlton Dennis-coached Santos had a number of good chances but failed to add to their tally.

Portmore's top players Venecia Reid, Rochelle Bryan and Iesha Mowatt failed to trouble the Santos defence marshalled by Peta-Gaye Smith.

Meanwhile, last year's winners Harbour View crashed 3-2 against league champions Barbican. Jody-Ann McGregor led Barbican with a hat-trick, while Chevell Martin netted a brace for Harbour View.

Waterhouse advanced to the final four as a double from Tasheka Small and lone strikes from Davia Morris and Kedine Salmon carried them to a 4-0 win over Los Perfectos.

At Cling Cling Oval, GC Foster, courtesy of a hat-trick from Karell White and a brace from Rashana Palachi, beat Olympic Gardens, 6-0, to book their spot.
