Sharpes, JDF reign supreme in hockey leagues
Sharpes Rebels topped the Women's National Hockey League while the Jamaica Defence Force bested the Top Four Championship in the Men's League earlier this week at the Mona Astroturf.
Chakira Airey and Trudy Ann Knight scored in the 29th and 67th minutes for Sharpes to clip Tropics 2-1 and win the Women's National Hockey League with 13 points.
Tropics finished with 12 points, with Jhanel Johnson scoring the lone goal in the 43rd minute.
Despite finishing as runners-up in the four-team women's league, Tropics had the leading scorer in Shakeela Elliott with five goals, two more than Sharpes' Tashawna Edwards and Trudy-Ann Knight, both on three goals apiece.
St Andrew Hockey Club (HC) finished third with nine points, after beating Excelsior HC 2-0. Karen Wilson and Nikki Bradshaw were on target in the eighth and 24th minutes, respectively.
In the Top Four Championship, meanwhile, Sheldon Brown (15th minute), Jerome Davis (49th minute) and Andrew Fletcher (51st minute) ensured that JDF stopped league champions Circus Circle 3-2 in the final.
Gerald Richards and Kemar Mitchell scored for Circus Circle in the 46th and 67th minutes, respectively.
In the semi-final round, Mitchell hit a double in Circus Circle 4-3 win over Sharpes, while Jerome Davis struck four times in JDF's 6-1 whipping of Raiders United.
The next competition for the Jamaica Hockey Federation is the Super League set for September, a nine-a-side tournament with head coach and managers appointed by the technical director.
Following that, is the National Indoor Championships, a six-a-side open competition, will take place in November.
